Artist's Comments

"See that twice-born bird, how white--
Like a water-lily seeming;
Wings outspread to left and right--
Oh, how pious! dreaming, dreaming!"

"What he is ye do not know,
Or you would not sing his praises.
He is our most treacherous foe;
That is why no wing he raises."

That bowl is a decorative bowl I used for his little photo shoot, it holds about 5 litres.
His current tank holds 11.4 litres and has a filter, heater, and light. [link] (Forgive it's appearance I'm in the process of moving him to a community tank)

I've had my betta for about 2 years, maybe a little longer. The first year I had him he lived in a vase (of about 3.7 litres) with glass beads at the bottom. [link] A lot of people say its better to have the fish in a larger tank like the one I have him in currently but he was just as happy, if not happier in a regular glass bowl.

I would suggest buying a betta because they have so much personality and they are easy to care for.
If you were to keep one in a glass bowl you need to do a water change every week and make sure his bowl is somewhere with a -constant- temperature 70°F-79°F (21°-26° C). I eventually decided to put mine in a tank with a heater because it was getting a little too cold where I was keeping him.

Goldfish on the other hand are VERY messy fish and they grow quite large. Don't get me wrong, I love goldfish but they are a lot more work than people realize. They definately should NOT be kept in a bowl. I have a friend who keeps a huge goldfish in a small bowl (I wish I had a picture :( ). Its lost all its coloring and has no room to swim because its grown so large. Goldfish are very hardy and can survive in colder temperatures. If that's what you're looking for.

I hope I've helped a little. All the numbers should be right (I had to use a converter XD). If you have more questions, feel free to ask. I can direct you to some good websites too if you would like. :D
